STOP TESCO
About the group and STOP Tesco St Albans Limited

OUR AIMS

  • to ensure that there is full involvement of the local community in the debate, discussion and decisions relating to the redevelopment of the area bordered by Alma Road, Bedford Road, Inkerman Road, Lattimore Road and London Road in St Albans (the “site”);

  • to represent the views of people opposed to a large scale supermarket development on the site;

  • to encourage redevelopment of the site which accords with the wishes and views of local residents and the wider community in St Albans and Hertfordshire; and

  • to encourage and support local community activity aimed at improving the cohesiveness of community and the wellbeing and vitality of people and infrastructure in St Albans.

To ensure that there is transparency, we have formed a company (STOP Tesco St Albans Limited) which is limited by guarantee.  The company has a Board of Directors and a group of members.

We will publish accounts and minutes of our formal meetings, so that you can see how we are conducting ourselves as a group, and where money is being spent.  We think this is particularly important as we are now accepting donations from supporters.

Tesco provided artist's impressions of a proposed 55,000 square foot development on London Road (opposite the old Odeon cinema and extending along Alma Road towards Inkerman Road) but has not yet made a formal planning application.  This could happen at any time.  These were then revised to a 44,000  square foot development
We believe that the development will mean:

  • Increased traffic throughout the centre

  • Damage to the local and city centre businesses

  • Destruction of locally listed buildings

  • Air, noise and light pollution

  • No opportunity for a community based alternative
