TESCO REVEALS NEW PLANS

See our submission to the Council setting out objections to the application

The plans

Although Tesco has now made a formal planning application, the application is not yet public.  We expect this to happen shortly.  However, we obtained documents some time ago which Tesco gave to the Council. The leaflet for their consultation seems to suggest that these plans stand (they are shown in the leaflet).  Tesco says this is a 44,000 square feet store.

  • 25-29 Inkerman Road demolished

  • 71-93, Norman House and petrol station in London Road demolished

  • Dedicated parking areas for Alma Road (18 spaces just behind Francis Court)

  • Inkerman Road (6 spaces where No 25 is being demolished)

  • London Road 3 storey town houses (14 spaces under houses inc. 2 disabled)

  • 36 staff parking spaces behind town houses.

  • Changed layout on London Road with filter lane/slip road in each direction

  • The store isn't needed.  The council's own surveys show this

  • It is good to see some local properties retained, but remember this means Tesco is just taking less away, not giving the community anything.

  • Traffic management is an issue; there is very little room between the two junctions on London Road in which cars can queue without holding up through traffic; also, lorries turning into the loading bays can't use the slip lanes and will hold up traffic.  Traffic lights are unlikely to help.
